Monsoon and Diseases: How to prevent getting infected from monsoon illness


Though we all love monsoons for the cooling effect it brings to us, yet something that makes us weary about monsoon is the spread of illnesses which the rain shower brings along with it. As soon as monsoon starts diseases arrive with different symptoms which how hard you try you do get. Its a common funda, as a person besides you catches cold, and you too get greater chances of catching cold with him. Traveling in crowded buses and trains is one important cause of spread of diseases. For children its the class rooms that work as a disease catching center. Moreover how hard you try to keep yourself protected in monsoon, it may turn out to be less helpful.

Lets discuss about list of diseases caused during rainy season which seem to grasp people in their hood as soon as monsoon arrives.

List of Illness Caused in Rainy Season


Malaria 

Malaria has grown rampant with lots of mosquito breeding in neighborhoods. Every city registers increasing cases of Malaria every year and its become just another thing for us.

Cause of Malaria: We all know that Malaria is caused by mosquitoes, not each one but the particular Anpheles Mosquito which breeds during monsoon.

Symptoms of Malaria: Recurring fevers, severe chills, body ache, shivering

Precautions for malaria: Though you may not be able to prevent it entirely, yet one can avoid breeding of mosquitoes in particular areas. This is not just a community problem, though it may turn out helpful. Yet even if each and every individual works on it the spread of mosquito can be decreased by some percent. Use of mosquito nets is recommended. Don't let stagnant water pool up near your house or society. Ask the government for frequent fumigation during monsoons. Don't ignore even a slightest fever and get doctor's opinion.

Several Water Borne diseases 

This is one of the common reason of illness during monsoons and can get unavoidable.

Common waterborne diseases: Cholera, Typhoid, Stomach infection including Gastro-enteritis

Causes of Water borne diseases: Contaminated water is the main cause. In monsoons drinking water can get mixed up with germs, impurities, feces and many such pollutants which may impure it and once you drink it can cause illness.

Symptoms of Water borne diseases: stomach aches, vomiting, loose motions, indigestion

Precaution for water borne diseases: One should completely avoid eating outside in unhygienic conditions. Try to carry water along with you from home. Boil drinking water as and when required. Avoid eating street side foods. Vaccinations are available for certain illnesses like Cholera, check with your doctor for more information.

Common Colds 

Colds like common colds are unavoidable in monsoons. One can get infected once they share a room with someone who is suffering from it.

Causes of Colds: Due to viral infections from others, arriving wet in the office and sitting directly in an air-conditioned room, not drying head properly and allowing the wet head to dry on its own.

Symptoms of Colds: constant sneezing, watering nose, congestion, allergies, blocked nose, difficulty in breathing, fever

Precautions for cold: Try to wipe yourself dry once wet in rain. Use of fresh napkins, hand sanitizers, constant washing of hands with soap water etc is recommended. Try to include warm soups or hot tea and coffee in your daily diet.

Leptospirosis 

Leptospirosis is a deadly disease and is quite common in monsoons. This disease happens in areas where there is lot of contamination and dirt. Most of all highly un-hygienic places where lots of rats share space with human beings.

Causes of Leptospirosis: water contamination, present of animal feces in areas where humans live

Symptoms of Leptospirosis: severe chills, muscle aches, body aches

Precaution for Leptospirosis: The main precaution for leptospirorsis is to avoid any sort of contamination. Though this is not possible but still exposing our skin to such contamination should be avoided as far as possible. Specially our feet get in touch with such dirt and we should wash them preferably with soap and water once back home. Use of dettol in bath water is highly advisable. If you have wounds on your body, try to clean them every single day with antiseptic and thus keep such infections at bay.

Never ignore even a slightest illness during monsoons and always take doctor's advice if you fall sick. Take necessary precautions and try to diseases at bay in monsoons.
